The Sorensen approach

What is compost topdressing?

Compost is decayed organic material used as a plant fertilizer and soil amendment. Topdressing spreads a thin layer of compost over a lawn or flowerbed to improve the soil structure.

Compost topdressing is often completed with core aeration so compost can penetrate the root zone. Beneficial microbes help break down grass clippings and thatch, providing long-lasting nutrients.

Applying compost at seeding time creates a seed bed that improves germination.

Top 5 benefits of compost topdressing

  • Reduce soil compaction
  • Increase water retention
  • Add microbes that encourage deeper green turf
  • Support deeper, healthier roots
  • Reduce watering needs during demanding months
